Connor McDavid capped off his <a href="https://oilersnation.com/2025/01/01/the-day-after-37-0-why-keeping-zach-hyman-off-connor-mcdavids-line-could-be-the-right-move-for-the-oilers/">2024 calendar year in style</a>, passing Edmonton Oilers legend Mark Messier for the third-most points in franchise history.

And with McDavid&#8217;s 1,036 points passing Messier&#8217;s 1,034, there are only two players that stand ahead of him in the franchise annals: Jari Kurri and Wayne Gretzky.
It won&#8217;t take long for McDavid to be second to The Great One, as Kurri scored 1,043 points over his tenure with the Oilers — a mark McDavid now sits seven points back of tying, and eight from surpassing Kurri&#8217;s mark.
McDavid secured third place on <a href="https://oilersnation.com/2025/01/01/tkt-oilers-utah/">Tuesday night against the Utah Hockey Club</a>, picking up two second-period assists in Edmonton&#8217;s 4-1 win.
Other accolades were hit on Tuesday, too, as McDavid, who scored 42 goals and 138 assists between the regular season and playoffs in 2024, became the third player in NHL history to record 180 points in a single calendar year. The only two who hit the mark are Wayne Gretzky, who did so nine times in his career, and Mario Lemieux, who did so three times.
McDavid&#8217;s numbers weren&#8217;t far off of Lemieux&#8217;s best, when he recorded 200 points in the 1988 year. Gretzky&#8217;s best, meanwhile, came in 1983 when he scored 252 points.
Lastly, McDavid&#8217;s night marked the 39th time in 2024 that he recorded a multi-point game, joining Gretzky as the second player to do so as many times in a calendar year, hitting the mark in 11 different years.
They&#8217;re further accolades in which McDavid is mentioned in the likes of Gretzky and Lemieux, continuing to highlight his exceptional talents that have already landed him in many &#8220;Mount Rushmore&#8221; conversations about the greatest to ever play the game.
Beyond McDavid, there are other current Oilers close to passing players on the franchise&#8217;s all-time scoring list. <a href="https://oilersnation.com/2025/01/01/oilers-top-10-plays-from-december-draisaitls-dominance-hymans-heater-and-clutch-goals/">Leon Draisaitl&#8217;s</a> 906 points are currently tied with Glenn Anderson for fifth in the scoring records, while Darnell Nurse (282 points) is eight away from tying Dave Hunter for 22nd. Zach Hyman&#8217;s 235 points, meanwhile, are four back of tying Jason Arnott for 25th. Evan Bouchard&#8217;s 199 points have him 19 back of tying Steve Smith for sixth in scoring by defencemen.
